Message from the President

Dear Friends of FOMAR,

It is a pleasure to note that 2025 marks our 10th anniversary. Friends of Megan Animal Rescue has been rescuing animals and providing care and services to animals in need in Oaxaca for a decade! Just last year, we rescued 48 pups and some other animals in addition.

This past year, we rescued a badly injured burro we named Milagro (“miracle”), and whom we will continue to support. I say we, but it is primarily Rebecca, whose letter appears below, who does all the hands-on work. She is in Oaxaca year-round, while we only visit. She is the one who conducts the numerous clinics, with the help of Board Member Melinda Hanson, also in Oaxaca, at nearby municipalities. Last year, she held three such clinics for vaccinating and sterilizing over 140 area dogs and cats. She is hoping, over the course of this year, to shift her emphasis even more to these clinics and various other outreach efforts.

This year, we are also welcoming several new board members with the retirement of David and Linda Boyd, two of our original founders. It will take two persons to replace all of the work Linda has done —  those two will be Sherie Hohs and Carey Allen, both of whom live in Oaxaca (at least a good portion of the year). David’s monumental work in tracking expenses, rescues, sterilizations, etc. will be taken over by Amie Durden. We are so grateful for the past work done as well as for the enthusiasm of our new volunteers.

Message from the Executive Director

Dear Supporters, Volunteers, and Animal Lovers,

As we close the chapter on another year, I want to take a moment to reflect on the remarkable achievements we’ve accomplished together at Friends of Megan Animal Rescue.  Your dedication and compassion have been the driving force behind our efforts, and I am immensely grateful for your support.

This year, we proudly hosted several sterilization clinics, providing vital services that have helped reduce the number of unwanted animals in our community. Thanks to your contributions, we were able to sterilize over 140 pets, promoting healthier lives and responsible pet ownership.

We also faced heart-wrenching challenges this year as we responded to the devastating fires that affected our local area. Our team worked tirelessly to assist animals who suffered burns, providing emergency care, rehabilitation, and a safe haven. Your generous donations allowed us to deliver critical support to these brave animals during their time of need.

One of the most inspiring stories from this year was the rescue of Milagro, a burro who endured a horrific animal attack. With your help, we provided immediate medical attention and a nurturing environment for her.  Today, she is on the path to recovery and serves as a testament to the resilience of animals in our care.

As we look forward to 2025, we are excited about the possibilities ahead. We are committed to expanding our outreach and educational programs, ensuring that we can continue to provide essential services to both animals and our community.
