Message from the Board of Directors

2018 was a year of discovery for FOMAR. Early in the year, the guiding force behind FOMAR, our Executive Director Rebecca Durden Raab, discovered that her cancer had returned, and she needed to return to the U.S. for treatment. We weren’t sure what that would mean for FOMAR. To our great relief and satisfaction, we discovered that FOMAR was much more than one person. In the U.S., Rebecca was able to field calls that came from our website and Facebook page, and back in Oaxaca, a support team rose to the task.

FOMAR is housed at Casa Raab, a bed and breakfast just outside the beautiful colonial city of Oaxaca, MX. The Casa Raab staff, along with help from Rebecca’s mother on-site, Coralie Durden, continued to care for the Casa Raab rescues. And our tireless assistant volunteer Joanne Moeschl stepped up her efforts to house and care for rescued animals. Rescues, sterilizations, treatments, and adoptions were also able to continue almost unabated, thanks to the efforts of FOMAR’s invaluable veterinarian, Dr. Luciano Carranza. In addition, on his own initiative through several clinics, he sterilized hundreds of dogs in the spirit of FOMAR. FOMAR hopes to continue these efforts in 2019. Altogether, the year was a revelation!

Continuing our work this year in any fashion would not have been possible at all save for the generous donations we received from people like you. Last year we had 31 renewing donors, 16 new donors, and 28 people who donated through Rebecca’s Facebook Birthday Challenge for a total of 75 donors in all — almost double the number from 2017! Of interest — 41 of our 2018 donors have been guests at Casa Raab and have seen FOMAR in practice, a nice testament to the quality of FOMAR’s operation. We invite you to discover FOMAR for yourself! Come to Casa Raab
in Oaxaca and experience our mission in action.

So, we thank all of you for your generosity. You have had an incredible impact on the lives of some of Oaxaca’s most vulnerable animals. To see a frightened, sick, starving animal come to FOMAR and be transformed into a healthy, happy, socialized puppy with a future in a loving home is something to behold.

Thank you for continuing to support this wonderful cause. All donations are U.S. Tax-deductible. Every penny you send (we have virtually NO administrative expenses) saves an animal that would almost certainly die without your help.

Thank you,

Message from the Executive Director

Hi Y’all,

Thank you everyone for your generous donations. They have made an incredible impact on the lives of so many animals here. Also, a huge note of thanks to those of you who have adopted. I’m always pleased and amazed that so many of our animals have made it into loving homes in Mexico and the United States.

I’d like to share a bit of personal history that many of you don’t know. Three years ago, I was diagnosed with cancer. This past year it returned so most of my time was spent in the US. The good news is two-fold: my cancer seems to be in remission, and FOMAR hasn’t slowed one bit. I’ve received so many calls and emails from y’all looking for help. Fortunately, FOMAR’s veterinarian, Luciano, who has worked with me for the past 20 years, stepped up and took over.
In addition, Luciano put on three separate spay and neuter clinics, sterilizing several hundred dogs. This has been a long-term dream and goal of mine.

I’ve noticed since I’ve been home that more and more people are leaving food and water out for homeless dogs. AND I’ve also noticed that there are more and more animal rescue sites for Oaxaca on Facebook. We began 2019 with two adorable sister puppies that just left recently for their forever home, together. All of this is wonderful news!

Thank you all again, and always remember that it only takes one person to make a lasting effect on a dog or cat’s life.

Kind regards,

Rebecca Durden Raab
